FFL TRANSFER PROCESS

The FFL transfer process is a crucial step for legally acquiring a firearm that was purchased online. It ensures that all federal and state regulations are followed. The process can be broken down into three key steps.

Before you even purchase a firearm online, you need to find a licensed dealer in your area who is willing to facilitate the transfer. An FFL (Federal Firearms Licensed) dealer is an individual or business authorized by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) to engage in the sale and transfer of firearms.

  • Finding a Dealer: Many online retailers, including Sentry Firearms, provide an FFL locator tool at checkout to help you find a nearby dealer. You can also search online for “FFL dealers near me” or “gun stores near me.”
  • Making Contact: It is critical to contact the dealer before you make your purchase. You should confirm the following:
  • They accept transfers: Not all FFL holders offer this service.
  • Their transfer fee: This is a common fee for handling the paperwork and is typically paid directly to the dealer. Fees can vary widely, so it’s a good idea to check with a few different dealers.
  • Their procedures: Ask if they require a copy of the seller’s FFL, or if they prefer to be contacted by the seller directly. This helps ensure a smooth process.

Once you have a confirmed FFL dealer, you can proceed with your online purchase.

  • Provide Dealer Information: During the checkout process on the Sentry Firearms website, you will be prompted to select your chosen FFL dealer from their list or provide their information if they are not listed.

  • Shipping: The online retailer will then ship the firearm directly to your chosen FFL dealer. Federal law requires that firearms can only be shipped to a licensed dealer, not to a private residence.

When the firearm arrives you will go to your selected FFL dealer’s location and start the transfer process. Make sure to take your time filling out the form(s) to avoid common mistakes.

  • Visit the Dealer: Go to the FFL dealer’s location to complete the required paperwork.

  • Form 4473: You will be required to fill out an ATF Form 4473, which is the official Firearms Transaction Record. This form collects personal information and requires you to answer a series of questions to verify your eligibility to own a firearm. It is crucial to be accurate and truthful on this form.

  • Background Check: The FFL dealer will use the information from the Form 4473 to conduct a mandatory background check through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS). In some states, this is done through a state-specific system. The background check will confirm that you are not legally prohibited from purchasing a firearm.

  • Transfer of Ownership: Once the background check is approved, and any state-mandated waiting periods have passed, you will pay the transfer fee and can legally take possession of your firearm.
